The Varsity Football team opened up ECC play on Friday September 14th at the castle with a huge victory against previously undefeated Anderson.
The Knights started the game on fire with three unanswered scores. Anderson responded with two straight touchdown drives in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
The Knights ended up on top 35-14.
Senior Running Back Nak’emon Williams was a huge part of the Knights offense. Williams rushed for 221 yards and tacked on 3 scores, including an 89 yard touchdown run that sealed the deal for Kings late in the fourth.
When asked about his performance, Nak’emon said, “I just trusted my O-line would get the job done which they did. The O-line won that game.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Kings had its hands full. Anderson came into the game 3-0, with their offense being a huge reason for that record.
Before Friday, Anderson had not been held under 30 points this season. The Knights defense played stout and held Anderson to just 14 points. Senior DB Jay Cheatham had 2 big interceptions for Kings.
Senior DB and defensive captain Max Mckelvey said preparing for Anderson’s air raid offense was “different than most teams.”
“We added an extra DB this week and it paid off. We couldn’t exactly mimic how they played but we held our own.”
After the Knights game winning field goal last week against Turpin, Kings sits in atop the ECC standings.
In terms of playoff chances the Anderson win puts the Knights in a great position. Beating Anderson (a division II school) gives the Knights 6.0 initial points, potentially even more depending on how Anderson ends the season record wise.
With the Turpin and Anderson wins, the Knights are the top team in the Division II Region 8 playoff picture. If Kings wins out, they have a great chance to host a first-round playoff game.
At 4-1, Kings controls its own destiny in region 8.
